A Little Kindness Goes A Long Way

I've been working on this blog post all month, but haven't had a chance to post it.  Some of the reason for the delay has been time, but the other has been due to having more and more to add to it, and what a good thing that is.

Adapting to two kids has been a challenge.  I find myself wondering why I ever thought having just one kid was hard!  Thankfully, I am part of an amazing marriage and my husband and I work very hard together to get through the learning curve.  But sometimes you can't help but feel overwhelmed, like I did the first time I loaded both children into our chariot-sized double stroller and set foot in the mall.  At Christmas time.  Yikes!

However, my stressed started to melt away as strangers, dear sweet shoppers during the crazy holiday season, would stop and smile at me.  They would remark that I had my hands full, and I would nod and smile.  But then they would say something akin to, "But you've got this," or "You're doing great," or "they are such sweet kids," or "They really are blessings."  Those people have no idea how much their kindness lifted my heart, reassured me that I would get through these crazy days of a demanding three year-old and a needy newborn.  One sweet woman, after watching me struggle with keeping Little Buddy calm as we waited much too long to place our order in the food court (I have no idea what the people in front of me were ordering..a banquet maybe?) offered to bring our food to me at our table so I could just get the kids set up and not have to get up again.  What an amazing gesture!  I couldn't thank her enough!  And as we sat there, Little Buddy eating nuggets and me nursing sister while also eating, we got so many compliments on how cute/sweet/well-mannered our little family was and how blessed we were.  Each small gesture of support and kindness bolstered me up so much.

Then later, after a potty break for a cranky nap-needing Little Buddy, we had to stop and sit on a bench to feed sister.  A woman walked into the bathroom and, as I moved my giant stroller so she could walk through, she gave me some of the best parenting advice that I've ever received.  She talked a little with me and Little Buddy first, praising him for being a great big brother and giving me assurances and support like those throughout the day.  But then, after being impressed with things Little Buddy told her, she told me, "They are such a blessing aren't they?  And you always get back what you put in."  I love that.  And I am going to work very hard to practice that.  If I put stress, anxiety, and a short temper in with my children, that's what I'll get back.  I'm instead going to strive to put in calmness, gratitude, patience, and a remembrance of what a miracle my crazy, sweet family is.  Because I would love to get that back.  And I would love to keep all the sentiments I heard today alive in my heart and attitude.

Soon after that sweet lady left, Little Buddy fell asleep while I finished feeding Little Sweetie.  I took a picture to remember the moment.

"You always get back what you put in."

So my mall trip ended up not being as crazy as I envisioned.  And, later that week, after I had told my husband about my experience, we were all out to lunch together and experienced another moment of kindness.  A family that was sitting near us told us, before they left, how sweet and well-behaved our kids were.  What a nice thing for them to say and what a nice thing for us to hear after struggling with balancing our new roles as parents of two.

So remember, when you see a mom struggling with two kids, or anyone struggling with anything for that matter, please be kind.  You don't have to do much, but it can make an impact.  You never know how much that kindness will mean to them, or how it can stay with them.

Sending you all kindness,

LBM

Christmas Fun!

We had quite an exciting Christmas Eve and Christmas this year!  It was actually the first Christmas we have had without our families (we'll be traveling in January for a late Ohio Christmas celebration), but I think we were still able to make it memorable for Little Buddy (plus, I know he'll be excited by more Christmas gifts next month).

On Christmas Eve, we braved the movie theaters with a three year-old and a two month-old to take Little Buddy to his first movie.  We were thrilled with how great he did (thank goodness we brought plenty of oranges and fruit strips for the times he started getting antsy)!  We saw Disney's Frozen and all of us enjoyed it.  Well, Little Sister slept through it, which added to entire theater's enjoyment, I'm sure!

Pretending to play the ukelele with Olaf!

After the movie and the shortest nap ever, it was time to make Christmas cookies.  Love my little baking helper!

Rolling the dough!

Our Christmas Eve is magical each year because Santa always finds time to stop at our house during his world travels.  Little Buddy was really excited by it this year!

Little Buddy discovering that Santa has stopped by, allowing him one more chance to beg for his football helmet and scooter!

Santa posing with Little Buddy and Little Sweetie (in her reindeer suit)!

And then after all the excitement, it was time to sleep so we could wake up to Christmas morning and...

Presents!

Little Sister got her first present, a set of books from her big brother!

Sweet siblings!

What is this?  Santa came through with Little Buddy's football helmet and scooter!  Hooray!

Because we didn't travel for the holiday and had no family in town, we met up with some of our friends who were in similar situations for Christmas dinner.  Little Buddy had a great time playing with his friends before we headed home to meet Uncle C and Miss A.

Happy Birthday Jesus!

My very tired buddy with his friends!

Showing off his new football gear for Uncle C!

We had a lovely Christmas as a family of four and hope the holidays find all of you happy and healthy as well!

Merry Christmas,

Family Date to San Antonio!

Because we aren't traveling for the holidays until January for a late Christmas, we decided to take our first mini-vacation as a family of four to San Antonio.  With the River Walk and Sea World decorated for Christmas, we thought the trip would be a fun way to put us in the spirit of the season.  We stayed at a hotel downtown and walked to nearly everything.  Minus a head bump (Little Buddy fell out of bed) and a bit of crankiness from lack of sleep, we had a great time!

We spent the first night on the River Walk.  Although the boat ride took a little longer than Little Buddy would have liked ("All done!" "Sorry, buddy, we can't jump off and into the water!"), it was a lot of fun and the decorations were gorgeous.

Enjoying the first part of the boat ride!

We spent the next morning at the Children's Museum.  It is an amazing place and our little guy really enjoyed it!

Lots of fun with the trolley and pretending to be a farmer!

We headed to Sea World after nap time.  Little Buddy loves it there, not just for the animals, but for the Sesame Street part of the park.  Particular favorites this trip included the dolphins, the sea lion show, feeding the sea lions, and, of course, the Sesame Street characters!

Loaded in the stroller and headed into the park!

First roller coaster!

Posing for pictures!

Utter joy while watching the Sesame Street show (followed quickly by utter despair once they left the stage)!

Spoiled beyond measure!  Both brother and little sister with their new Sesame Street purchases: Bert and Prairie Dawn!

We spent Sunday morning at the Alamo.  It's a great place to let him run around and burn off some energy before our long drive back home (thankfully, he did great with the drive to and from San Antonio.  We were pleasantly surprised!).

Lots of fun at the "Al-mo" with its cannons!

So went our first family vacation with two kids.  I have to say it was a big success and am a little less worried about our flying back to Ohio next month!

Good night,

Christmas Program

Little Buddy's Christmas program at school was today and, although he does curb his performing tendencies in big groups, my shy guy came through and was really cute with his classmates as they sang "Twinkle, Twinkle, Christmas Star."  I was pretty impressed he remembered most of the motions!

So proud of him!

Night all,

December 11

Sometimes I am amazed by how time changes once you have children.  The saying that "the days are long but the years are short" is quite accurate.  It's been three and a half years since Little Buddy joined our family.  It's passed in the blink of the eye but also feels like we've never known life without him in it.  We love you, sweet boy!

Three and a half today!

We've been keeping busy this month as we've enjoyed a great visit with Mamaw and Papaw and continued to adapt to life with a baby sister.

Loved spending time with Mamaw!

Bath time is sure different with two!

Two peas in a pod!  Little Buddy loves to incorporate her into his routines and tries his best to play with her (we keep working on "gentle")!

Though he does work to make sure that we don't forget to give him attention!

We even managed to take our beast of a double stroller out for it's inaugural use.  We were quite the sight as we took a stroll around the neighborhood!

It's quite the family affair to take the dog for a walk!

There have a been a lot of art projects going on around our house as well.  As the weather turns cool and rainy, we've been inside more and art projects are some of the best ways to occupy my little guy.  And they are also a great way to make Christmas presents (can't believe it's right around the corner)!

Playdough and painting

Gingerbread house decorating and the fruits of our ornament painting!

And looky here, we even got our first Santa picture done with our two little ones!

Height and Weight
Still 50 lbs. and hanging right around 42 inches (bit of discrepency between our height measurement at home and the doctor measurement from the hospital downtown).

Big guy!

Personality
Still very happy and sweet, but still a bit shy in big groups.  He does get a temper when he doesn't get his way (or when I tell him it's time to go potty and he doesn't want to go), but otherwise is still pretty easy going.  However, I have noticed the "selective hearing" having developed.  He only hears what he wants to hear sometimes!

Developmental Milestones
Potty training is still going well!  We have let go of the idea that he is going to wake up one day and be perfectly potty chained.  It is definitely a process with this one!  He is beginning to tell us in stores when he has to go, which is a huge step.  We are still working on him being comfortable enough to tell other people.  What is really funny is that his biggest motivation is not anything immediate, but the promise Papaw made him that if he did his business in the potty he could have a ride on Papaw's school bus in January.  Never knew a kid that was motivated by delayed gratification!  Between that and a promise he can join the swimming team once he is potty trained, we might reach this milestone one day!

Papaw's school bus!

Fun Tidbits
Just a few funny things to record so that we don't forget them!

Elbow water:  If Little Buddy showers with us, he always tries to fill the rinse cup with water that drips off our elbow...hence "more elbow water please, Momma."  Never fails to crack me up!

Hey kids:  He refers to all people he doesn't know as "kids."  This means when he tries to talk to anyone (e.g., cashiers, police officers, old ladies) he calls out to them, "Hey kids, what are you doing?"

He also can sight recognize several works, including: Momma, Daddy, Baby, Chesney (our dog's name), our last name, his name, and his sister's name.  I'm excited to get him on the right track for reading!

Looking forward now to Christmas.  Hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday season!
