Well, Little Buddy had his 4 year well check today. Overall, it went well. Our little man is perfectly healthy and still maxing out the weight and height charts while still being perfectly proportional, meaning he is just a big dude! We did reassess all his developmental milestones, as our pediatrician said we would do way back in January when we came in at 3 1/2, and did find some concerns. Based on his gross and fine motor evaluations, Little Buddy now has referrals for an Occupational Therapist, a Physical Therapist, and a behavior assessment.
I'm so glad we have been realistic with ourselves about our concerns regarding his development. The referrals didn't come as a shock (though it does take a minute to come to terms with the idea that this may not be something he'll "grow out of" and therefore needs extra help), but some of the milestones that he still needs to hit did surprise me. I hadn't realized that by 4 years he should be able to hop on one foot and then alternate to the other foot, or that his inability to sit "criss-cross-applesauce" by this age is also troubling, or that his improper crayon grip and scribbling tendencies signaled that his fine motor skills really need attention. Four really is the magic number to discern any difficulties!
It's hard to hear that your child needs extra help, but we're trying so hard to focus on the positive that something amiss has been discovered is now being addressed. That's what's important. Our little guy is still as happy and loving as always and we're hoping that with some extra work, he'll be back on track (and that this extra attention to motor skills and concentration will help up with the potty difficulties we've been having as well!). I've already talked to a few friends that said that early intervention made a HUGE difference for their kiddos, so I am hoping we'll see similar positive results.
Anyway, keep Little Buddy in your thoughts and we'll keep you posted!
As always,
LBM
